When designing a satellite network, our priority is meeting your application requirements as well as our standards for performance and reliability. We have active networks using dozens of different satellite modem, antenna and spacecraft technologies, each tailored to the client’s unique specifications.
We select only thoroughly tested and field-proven technology platforms and architectures. To meet the varied needs of our clients, we employ three main types of satellite networking solutions.
Point-to-Point Dedicated Links use Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) technology to provide dedicated inbound (transmission from the site) and outbound (receiving at the site) satellite bandwidth exclusively for each individual location. In an SCPC dedicated link, each site receives a true “Committed Information Rate” (CIR), which guarantees a consistent data rate to and from the remote site at all times.
This approach is best suited for high duty-cycle locations that require nearly continuous use of the satellite bandwidth; sites that operate near real-time applications; or sites that host numerous simultaneous sessions of voice, video and data applications. Since the satellite capacity is dedicated exclusively to each individual site, it tends to be the most expensive design topology.
Multi-point Asymmetric Networks use a combination of an SCPC dedicated link for the inbound transmissions and a much larger shared Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) carrier for outbound communications. The shared outbound TDM bandwidth is generally shared only among sites of a specific client, effectively making it a private cloud for receive-only traffic. In this approach, the data rate for the inbound link is a true CIR, as with an SCPC link. Data rates for outbound can be set with a CIR, but can also be enabled to a benefit from a higher “Managed Information Rate”, when un-utilized capacity is available on the TDM carrier. This approach is well suited to sites with inbound-intensive applications, where data from the remote site may need a near continuous connection (such as real-time video or telemetry data), but communications received at the site are more traditional IP-based applications such as enterprise systems, Internet access and VOIP phone services.
Multi-point Private Networks or Private Cloud Networks use Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology carriers for both inbound and outbound bandwidth. This approach can be considerably more efficient than a Dedicated Link or Asymmetric Network solution. It allows the client to determine the amount of bandwidth that is shared (or contended) by its own sites, and therefore control the overall quality of service.
These networks are well suited to clients with multiple geographically dispersed locations within a single satellite coverage area who would benefit from the economies of scale of sharing a common communications infrastructure. TDMA-based networks support a wide variety of IP applications including enterprise systems, Internet access and VOIP services.
